‘As soon as I arrived at the University of Lille, I knew I was going to love it...’

Virginie Deschaux

Originally a secondary school Spanish teacher, Virginie changed careers and joined the university as a Student Administrator on an internship that later became an apprenticeship. In September 2018, Virginie decided to sit a BOE (bénéficiaires de l’obligation d’emploi) competitive examinationand thus came to fill the position she previously held, while continuing with her work to support students. ‘I was a bit like a mother to these students, who were the same age as my sons’, she says with a smile.

A rewarding experience

Won over by her experience at the University and the wide range of jobs it offered, Virginie seized a new opportunity for internal mobility and landed her current position as administrative and medical secretary in the Occupational Health Department. For Virginie, this internal mobility experience was a smooth one. ‘It all happened so quickly! In just 2 weeks, I had completed my interview and received a positive response’, explains Virginie. After being recruited, she was also supported in her move to the new position. ‘I was able to get off to a good start thanks to an integration week with the department’s teams’, she explains.

A job involving contact with others

From welcoming and guiding employees, to scheduling appointments, sending out summonses, carrying out preventive actions, processing information and managing mail, the human aspect remains at the heart of Virginie’s work.

‘It’s a job that involves a lot of contact with people. You have to know how to listen, communicate, adapt how you speak, have empathy, manage priorities and beresponsive’.

Virginie also confides that this job requires a strong aptitude for writing. ‘All the administrative tasks of the job remind me of my literary soul’, she confides.

A university rich in professional opportunities

For Virginie, it’s great to have access to so many opportunities at the University of Lille. A wide range of training courses for staff, opportunities for career development, and a wide range of positions that can be filled via internal mobility – these are just some of the factors that have enabled her to flourish in her professional career. ‘I have recently been trained to carry out the vision and hearing tests that we offer at the Occupational Health Department for university staff’, Virginie reveals.
