The University of Lille is committed to supporting victims of various forms of gender-based violence, in particular intra-family, psychological, sexist and/or sexual violence.
Responding to situations of gender-based and/or sexual violence
Training courses and preventive measures to combat gender-based and sexual violence
Accessible to the university community (some of which are compulsory)
To combat gender-based and sexual violence (GBSV), the University of Lille is offering employees and students several training courses and awareness sessions. These courses can be taken by those at all levels of study (undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students) and by all members of staff (whatever their status).
Student training:
- Awareness-raising and information on violence (compulsory in first year),
- Complementary training courses ‘Taking action against GBSV’ (several modules to choose from),
- Student associations at the University of Lille wishing to obtain accreditation from the university are required to complete a specifictraining course.
Training courses for doctoral students: because of their special status, which means they are often both students and members of staff, doctoral students have access to a dedicated training course: ‘Psychological and sexual violence: prevention, taking action, and understanding the specificities of higher education and research’ (page 132 of the catalogue).
Staff training courses: as part of the equality in the workplace action plan, there are several training courses available. Depending on the individual’s position and duties, some of these may be compulsory.
A guide to information and support
Since 2019, the Equality and Diversity Mission has also offered a guide to inform and support victims and witnesses of GBSV and those close to them. The guide ‘Violences sexistes et sexuelles : que faire, qui alerter ?’ was put together following meetings with student associations who told us about students who didn’t know where to turn.
This guide is regularly updated and new content is added to provide support and guidance to people who experience or witness situations involving GBSV. It can be used to:
- clarify one’s understanding of a range of concepts (consent, conflict, violence, etc.),
- provide advice on the first steps to take when dealing with victims, focusing on recurring themes in higher education (bullying, hazing, cyber-violence, etc.),
- provide information on internal (disciplinary) and external (criminal) procedures,
- provide useful contacts.

The university’s mediation center
Open to all students and staff of the university, the mediation centre is a place where you will be welcomed and can find information and answers to legal and administrative questions. Its mission is to prevent abusive behaviour and conflicts, to achieve peaceful relations, and to raise awareness within the university community of issues such as the promotion of equality, the fight against discrimination and gender-based violence, and respect for secularism. It also has systems in place to combat sexual and psychological harassment.
